You’ve put it off long enough. You’ve finally decided it’s time to update your website. After launching over 150 sites, we’ve identified a few steps that we recommend taking to make the entire experience as smooth and on time as possible.

1. Establish your Goals

No matter what kind of work you do or who your clients happen to be, for the website to serve you (and your clients) well, it’s always a good idea to consider what role your web presence plays in helping you achieve your goals. What are your clients’ needs and what can your website do to meet them? What are your needs and how can your website serve your business? Is your website just providing information, or can business needs be met by online functionality? Knowing and prioritizing your goals will make the next steps far easier and more successful.

2. Determine your Structure

Once you have identified all of your goals, you can start to determine what structure the website might take. Outlining this structure carefully and thoughtfully will save you a great deal of time down the road and ensure that every requirement is met. It will also ensure that your website’s navigation is straightforward and logical.

3. Assemble your Content

Only after you’ve established your goals and structure should you start to assemble and create content. You want to make sure that every bit of content serves the greater goals and fits within the structure you have established. Ask yourself the following questions as you prepare to gather or create content:

  • Do I have current, up to date, and high quality photos of my products or services?
  • Is there a place on the website where videos rather than photography might best serve our goals?
  • Do I need to hire a professional photographer or videographer in order to present our work in the best light?
  • Do I have all of the written content needed for the new structure? And is this content up to date? Particularly our company description and team bios.
  • Is the description of our products or services brief, coherent, and captivating?
  • Do I need to hire a copywriter or editor to create content or edit and improve our current content?

Of course, content can be added or adjusted while the website is being designed and developed, but waiting on content can dramatically slow down the design process. Designing without knowing the content can often require redesign time at a later point as content that is eventually provided may no longer match initial design concepts.

4. Build your website

At Select Interactive we are experts at carefully crafting web and app experiences that are not only visually appealing, but also harness the best technology has to offer when it comes to speed and efficiency.

We prioritize relationships and are firm believers in the power of collaboration. We’d like to think we have a special knack for listening to our clients desires and translating their feedback into a website that gives voice to their vision and exceeds their expectations.

While this final step of the process is where the bulk of our work is done, a great web development team can certainly help you wade through the previous steps. Select Interactive is happy to help you pinpoint your goals, create an intuitive and easy to navigate structure, and even suggest content for your website. But the more preparation done in steps 1–3, the faster your stunning new website can reach your clients.

No matter where you are in this process, we would be happy to talk with you about how we could make your digital presence the best it can be. But knowing and following this simple process can save you time and money in the long run. So, dive in. Whatever you’re looking for, Select Interactive would be happy to help you build a beautiful, user-friendly website that meets your needs.
